OPEN METHODOLOGYWhat earns a place on Signals?

Meaningful growth at a smaller scale.

We screen the saved country and Americana catalog for 1,000–1 million Spotify monthly listeners, at least 10% monthly growth and a rise of at least 500 listeners. The previous monthly baseline must be at least 1,000. Artists identified as mainstream, superstar, legendary or established are excluded.

A move from 8,000 to 10,000 monthly listeners is +25% and qualifies. A move from 40 to 50 does not. No payment, article coverage or AI opinion adds points.

Only datasets dated within the past 14 days qualify. Missing, conflicting and future-dated observations cannot establish eligibility.

Five factors. Up to 100 points.

  • 30: monthly growth rate, capped at 100% growth.
  • 25: absolute monthly listener increase, on a logarithmic scale capped at 25,000.
  • 15: weekly growth, with at least 100 added and full points at 10%.
  • 10: quarterly growth, with at least 500 added and full points at 50%.
  • 20: up to four supporting follower platforms, 5 points each.

Supporting platforms need a prior baseline of 250, growth of 50 and at least 2% monthly growth. Missing support earns zero points. Equal scores break on absolute monthly gain, then percentage gain, then name and stable identity.

Research makes the next step clearer.

Verified reporting and industry announcements provide context. Our editor can investigate releases, signings and live activity around a signal. When available, AI selects a grounded research priority from the saved evidence; it cannot invent events or change the score.

The score prioritizes research. It does not predict hits, ticket sales, merchandise conversion or whether an artist is unsigned. Reported periods overlap, and dataset dates are not individual metric timestamps.

Saved data powers browsing. The board reuses cached results between saved-data updates. Opening and sorting it makes no new provider or AI requests.
